Summer, 1998

Message from the Chair
by Ken Mallett
It has been a busy Spring, far too busy for most members I suspect. The new RMS council met in May. They are:

Don Gelinas, Director
Ken Mallett, Chair
Jerry Sunderland, Vice-Chair
Todd Nash, Secretary Treasurer
Stan Kavalinas, Councillor
Sarah Gooding, Councillor
Ken Plourde, Councillor
Gord Sanders, Councillor
Teresa Stokes, Councillor
Don Pudlubny, AFTA Liasion

Dan Wilkinson, ARPFA Liaison

This is a dynamic group of people with whom I look forward to working with. Gord Sanders, Teressa Stokes, and Sarah Gooding will be coordinating the Technical Session programs this year. Planning for the first Technical Session (September 17-18) of the year is well underway and promises to be interesting and informative.

With the help of the ARPFA, we have our new website up and running. Newsletters, news, information on Technical Sessions, and links to other sites can be found at this address. I would encourage you to "bookmark" this site and visit it often to keep up with "Institute" news and business.

The RMS has donated a book, "Forest Ecology" Barnes et al. 1998, to the Cameron library, University of Alberta, in memory of Gordon Brown. The inscription reads:

Canadian Institute of Forestry - Rocky Mountain Section

This book is given to the library system of the University of Alberta in memory of Mr. Gordon Brown who died in a helicopter accident while practicing forestry. Gord graduated from the U of A forestry program in the Spring of 1976. He was a Registered Professional Forester (RPF #247) and a colleague, but most of all, he was a friend. Gord lived by the highest standards of our profession. He will be missed.

Mr. Gordon Brown (1953 - 1997)

Thanks to Paul Woodard for coordinating this donation. I would also like to give special thanks to our outgoing director, Al Benson, for his dedication and skill in organizing RMS Technical Session.

I hope everyone has a safe and productive summer!
