RMS Notes
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
by Teresa Stokes

Hello RMS Members,

The year is coming to a close for the RMS Board and with that our traditional Spring Technical Session and Annual General Meeting. The RMS AGM will take place at the Spring Technical Session on Friday, March 15, 2002 at the Shaw Conference Centre, Edmonton. The Session topic isSustainability of Timber Resources. Following the Session we are providing an opportunity for our members to mingle and unwind after a long week by organizing a wine (beer) and cheese social at the River View Room, Shaw Conference Centre. Even if you are unable to attend the Session I encourage you to join us at 4:30 p.m. We will be presenting Dr. David Kiil with the Tree of Life Award and there will be a chance for you to meet the Forestry graduates. Please visit our website for more information.

The RMS presented Dr. Paul Woodard with the Tree of Life Award at the Fall Technical Session in Grand Prairie, AB. Thank you to Alex Drummond for making the presentation and to Dr. Jim Beck for providing the Dr. Woodard anecdote.  The Technical Session “Woodlot Management in Alberta” would not have been possible without the help of Byron Grundberg, Past President, Woodlot Association of Alberta. Thanks Byron.

A recap of the Calgary session “Historical Sites, Wildland Parks, Forest Land Use Zones & Recreation Issues Relating to Industry, Government & User Groups can be found on the RMS web site. Thanks to Dave Bartesko for organizing this one. I really enjoyed presenting Gerry Seed and Harry Johnson with their 50-year CIF Golden Member awards and the CIF Gold Medal to Herman Stegehuis.

I attended the University of Alberta, Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics Awards Night in January. The University provided an opportunity for Award Donors to meet Award Recipients and their families.  I had the pleasure of meeting Samantha Basarab, winner of the Rocky Mountain Section Book Prize and Mecailla Christensen winner of the Rocky Mountain Section Award. The refreshments were not to bad either. Oh, the things I have to do for this organization.

The next two years will be busy for our Rocky Mountain Section members. The joint national meeting between the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the CIF and Rocky Mountain Section will see a number of us volunteering our time once again in making the 2004 Conference a successful one. I plan to announce the CIF/RMS General Chair at the Spring Technical Session.  You won’t want to miss it.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 2001-2002 RMS Board for their work this year. I respect that we all have other commitments (especially to our employers) and realize that it wasn’t always easy meeting obligations and timelines.  I ask the 1,000 RMS Members to give some thought on how you can help the Rocky Mountain Section serve its’ members better and then to act on it by volunteering some of your time to the Section.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

March and April are busy months with respect to forestry functions.   We hope you find this helpful.  If there is anything missing, let us know for next year.
