The weather at this time of year can be wonderful with clear skies, full fall colours, and warm sunshine. On the other hand early snow is not unheard of in the highlands of Algonquin Park. Appropriate clothing is a must to enjoy a comfortable, informative, and fun tour. If you choose one of the outdoor tours the best advice is to wear warm, comfortable, waterproof boots as warm feet provide a foundation to comfort. Dress in layers and include a waterproof outer shell. Don't forget your hat and camera. In some locations we will be out of cell service so log out for the day from your Blackberry.

All tours will arrive at Algonquin Park's famous Visitor Centre by 4:00 p.m. for socializing, dinner, a talk on Algonquin's wolves and a wolf howl.

wolf

Opened in 1993 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Algonquin Provincial Park and the entire Ontario provincial park system, the Algonquin Park Visitor Centre has world class exhibits on the Park's natural and human history, a relaxing restaurant and an excellent bookstore. A theatre presentation sums up the Park story and then takes you out to the viewing deck from where you can admire a breathtaking panorama of wild Algonquin landscape.

Our keynote speaker will be Rick Stronks who will present Algonquin's Public Wolf Howls - connecting the masses. Rick Stronks is the Chief Park Naturalist of Algonquin Provincial Park. He coordinates the Natural Heritage Education Program including the Visitor Centre, Art Centre, Logging Museum, park publications and education programs, including the Public Wolf Howls. Rick has a B.Sc. in biology and has worked as a high school teacher, fisheries biologist and environmental consultant.

Rick will lead the evening wolf howl as the sun goes down. We will return to Deerhurst by 9:00 p.m.

Quiz Bowl

The Student Quiz Bowl has become a very popular event at annual meetings for the Canadian Institute of Forestry. This event provides a time of friendly, team, head-to-head academic competition amongst forestry schools. Many of the student participants in this event have also competed successfully at recent Society of American Foresters (SAF) conferences. Applauded by students and seasoned professionals, this event continues to be a highlight for the Canadian Institute of Forestry conference as school teams compete for the recognition of the best knowledge of current forestry practices and resource issues.

The Quiz Bowl will be held Sunday evening at Deerhurst Resort in the Peninsula Room starting from 7:30PM to 9:00PM, followed by a Post Quiz Bowl Welcome and Reception. Take up the challenge and register your team by filling out the registration form under this tab and email it directly to:

In September, 2011 a conference for forest practitioners will be held at the Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, organized by the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada and hosted by the Algonquin Section. This conference is important to the forest sector as topics will be timely for sustainable forestry on a land base with unprecedented demands on the forests by stakeholders. This conference will give you some invaluable tools for the future management of Canada's forests, and more specifically, in northern Ontario and western Quebec.

The Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada is the only national voice of professional forestry in our country. This conference will provide professional development for forest practitioners across the land.

The conference is multi-themed with many concurrent sessions and is being developed with many partners with the goal of reducing the number of forest conferences and improving the diversity of forest practitioners at one informative event. The title of the conference is: Canada's Forest Conference 2011. Our volunteer organizing committee is dedicated to planning a comprehensive program, but we need help.

As a member of the forestry community, with strong connections to a sustainable forest, we are asking your assistance to meet two objectives. The first is to provide funds to assemble a dynamic slate of speakers yet ensuring the registration fee remains affordable for delegates. The second is to allow the organizing committee to plan special events, field trips and conference activities that will guarantee an unforgettable conference. We have developed a series of donation categories to recognize donors at different categories. A PDF and a DOC version of this chart are available here (click on the prefered format).

Although this is a first notice of the conference and we are not asking for a pledge at this time, we hope you will build our request into your budgeting plan, and commit funds to the conference in 2011, if not before. Click here for our pledge form in PDF or DOC format should you wish to contribute at any time.

We look forward to hearing from you and to your support of what is sure to be a special and remarkable Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada.
