About The Section

Rocky Mountain Section

The Rocky Mountain Section (RMS) is comprised of CIF members from Alberta. Our mission is to provide value to RMS members through linkages to the programs and activities of CIF National, providing learning and networking opportunities, introducing students to the CIF, and recognizing outstanding achievement through provision of professional and student awards.

Our Objectives

  1. Organization and delivery of one-day technical sessions on forestry-oriented topics selected in consultation with the RMS membership.
  2. Introducing the CIF to forestry students through presentations, networking opportunities, and sponsorship of student engagement with the CIF including CIF events, Silver Rings and provisions of several student awards.
  3. Supporting the membership to take full advantage of the programs and resources provided by CIF National.
  4. Recognizing significant contributions of forest practitioners through CIF National Awards.
  5. Actively provide current forestry news regarding the CIF and announcements from the forestry community through our Section website and social media channels.
  6. Linking with related organizations working on forest management, education and research issues in support of providing value to RMS members.

What We Do

We deliver our objectives through events, technical sessions, field tours, and meetings among members and council.

The activities and business of the Rocky Mountain Section Council are managed by a 14-member council consisting of a Director, Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, 6 councillors, and 4 student representatives (senior and junior from each of the University of Alberta (UofA) and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT)

The CIF Rocky Mountain Section hosted a technical session that included a diverse lineup of speakers from indigenous communities, industry, government and legal sectors will share their perspectives in areas like: what are the current legal and policy requirements for Indigenous consultation and engagement in Alberta, how are others approaching Indigenous engagement in forest management, and are there any legislative or policy changes forthcoming that may impact how indigenous engagement occurs.

November 25, 2021 | CIF-Rocky Mountain Section Technical Session – Climate Change & Forest Management: What are the impacts and what are we doing about it?  

The CIF Rocky Mountain Section hosted a technical session that included a diverse lineup of speakers from industry, government and the scientific community will share their expertise on: how climate change can be assessed in relation to forest management, how climate change can be considered and incorporated into forest management planning, how carbon is considered, and how wildfire management and climate change are related.

April 22, 2021 | CIF-Rocky Mountain Section Technical Session – The Changing Face of Silviculture: From basic to intensive management.  

The CIF Rocky Mountain Section hosted a technical session on the changing face of silviculture. Speakers from industry, government and the scientific community from across Canada discussed silvicultural practices ranging from basic to intensive management and their influence on the sustainability of Alberta’s forests.

Feb 25, 2021 | CIF-IFC Practitioners Forum: Strategies to advance sustainable forests

A technical forum was hosted by CIF National in collaboration with the Caribou and Rocky Mountain Sections to advance knowledge and identify needs and gaps pertaining to the characterization of forest biomass, and growth and yield of trees under global change and adaptive silviculture.

May 11, 2017 | CIF-Rocky Mountain Section Technical Session and Annual General Meeting – Alberta’s Silviculture Evolved

The CIF Rocky Mountain Section hosted a technical session that provided an update on classic silviculture subjects such as site preparation and herbicide use, described the innovation that has arisen in the industry in the past few years, and also presented the current application of silviculture in relation to reclamation of industrial sites. The Rocky Mountain Section AGM followed the Technical Session.

December 1, 2016 |CIF-Rocky Mountain Section Technical Session – Seismic Line Restoration

The CIF Rocky Mountain Section hosted a technical session on seismic line restoration. The goal of this session was to facilitate discussion and provide updated information on current land-use planning, policy, research and strategies surrounding development and reclamation of seismic lines in Alberta’s boreal forest.
