National Forest Week 2022 Showcases How Canada’s Forests Provide Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Change
The Canadian Institute of Forestry/Institut forestier du Canada (CIF-IFC) is inviting all Canadians from coast to coast to coast to celebrate National Forest Week (NFW) from September 18-24, 2022.
“National Forest Week brings organizations and Canadians from all different walks of life together to celebrate our forest heritage and increase awareness of this important renewable resource,” mentioned Mark Pearson, CIF-IFC Executive Director. “Forests and forestry will continue to play a critical role in mitigating the effects of climate change.”
The 2022 NFW theme is Canada’s Forests: Solutions for a Changing Climate, highlighting how Canada’s forests provide nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Forests help reduce climate change by trapping and storing greenhouse gases. Trees also soften the impacts of a changing climate and extreme weather by moderating temperatures and protecting biodiversity. Sustainable forest practices, research, conservation, engineered wood products, and innovative technologies provide solutions from Canadian forests.
There are many ways that Canadians can participate in NFW: engage in CIF-IFC’s free NFW-themed contests and activities, learn about forests and trees through the Institute’s educational resources, organize or participate in a tree plant, explore a forest near your home, or learn more about forests and sustainable forest management.
The ways in which forests and forestry provide nature-based solutions are highlighted in our NFW 2022 daily sub-themes:
- Sunday, September 18, 2022 – Forests and a changing climate
- Monday, September 19, 2022 – Capturing greenhouse gases
- Tuesday, September 20, 2022 – Innovative technologies and research
- Wednesday, September 21, 2022 – Forests and biodiversity
- Thursday, September 22, 2022 – Forest champions in our communities
